4. Bachelor of Optometry B.OPTM(4 year Degree course including 1 year Internship)
Eligibility:
Class XII, with Mathematics / Biology

Course Perspective: In India there is an acute shortage of eye specialists. Moreover they are concentrated mostly in big cities, so that a huge rural and suburban population is totally deprived of primary eye care. To curb this gap Govt. of India has introduced the course and has set a target of one optometrist per 50,000 population by the year 2020.

Although the course was introduced earlier in other states of India, but in Bengal it is relatively new. So there is a huge potential for jobs in different hospitals and clinics. They may set up individuial practice and apart from prescribing spectacles they may prescribe contact lenses, low visions aids test and then give exercise for squint patients and open up diagnostic clinics with machines like biometry and perimetry. They may prescribe certain medicines and refer patients to specialists.

As there is no council of optometry in India hence clinical registration is not needed. There is a huge scope for overseas employment.
